Home All The News Lampard hopes ‘huge talent’ plays a big role this season

The Blues have spent big this summer, mainly to bolster their attacking options. They have spent over £200m to bring in the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.

Lampard’s side have also seen some attacking players leave, however. Willian and Pedro have both left the club on free transfers to Arsenal and Roma respectively.

Hudson-Odoi enjoyed an impressive season for Chelsea during the 2019/20 campaign. He made 33 appearances in all competitions, helping Chelsea to a 4th place finish in the Premier League.

The winger was subject to heavy interest from Bayern Munich in January 2020. But he eventually decided to remain at Chelsea, signing a new bumper five-year deal in the process.

Lampard has led his side to an up-and-down start to the season. Chelsea were 3-0 down at half-time against West Brom in their last game.

Hudson-Odoi came off the bench and scored to help the Blues come back to earn a 3-3 draw with the Baggies.

Ziyech and Christian Pulisic are yet to feature this season, but when everyone is fit, it will be a challenge for Hudson-Odoi to be a regular starter.

In a recent interview, as cited by West London Sport, Lampard was hopeful that Hudson-Odoi could have a strong season:

“We are not inundated with wingers,” said Lampard. “We lost Pedro and Willian in the summer and we need competition and players because of the stress of the competitions we have to play in.

“If Callum comes on and makes an impact like he did against West Brom, if he keeps improving and developing every day, he is a huge talent – so let’s see.”

Frank Lampard has insisted Chelsea cannot afford to “overcook” speed king Christian Pulisic this season.

“They are top players and with Frank, I think it will not take them a long time to gel.”
