Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will miss Monday’s visit of Arsenal as he has not fully recovered from the knock which forced him off at half-time of Sunday’s win at Chelsea.

His absence increases the chances of a first start for new signing Thiago Alcantara, who was Henderson’s replacement at Stamford Bridge.

Joe Gomez trained on Friday and should be fit to resume his centre-back partnership with Virgil Van Dijk, with midfielder Fabinho on standby to fill in again as he did at Chelsea.

Arsenal are likely to have Kieran Tierney available for the first of two games at Anfield in the space of four days.

The Scotland defender was pulled out of the warm-up ahead of last weekend’s win over West Ham as a precaution with a tight groin but is expected to be back in contention.

After making seven changes for the Carabao Cup win at Leicester, the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Granit Xhaka and Willian should return to the side but Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Cedric Soares (both calf), Pablo Mari (ankle), Shkodran Mustafi (hamstring), Emile Smith Rowe (shoulder), Calum Chambers and Gabriel Martinelli (both knee) are all missing.

Liverpool provisional squad: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Thiago, Wijnaldum, Salah, Firmino, Mane, Adrian, Williams, Tsimikas, Milner, Keita, Jones, Minamino, Origi, Jota.

Arsenal provisional squad: Leno, Runarsson, Macey, Bellerin, Maitland-Niles, Gabriel, Holding, Luiz, Saliba, Kolasinac, Tierney, Saka, Ceballos, Elneny, Guendouzi, Torreira, Willock, Xhaka, Ozil, Nelson, Pepe, Willian, Aubameyang, Lacazette, Nketiah.

The two clubs recently met in the Community Shield clash at Wembley Stadium. On that occasion it was the Gunners who came out on top as Mikel Arteta picked up his second win over Jurgen Klopp in his young managerial career.

Despite this, it’s Liverpool who are the favourites to win this game at the current price of 4/9. Arsenal, meanwhile, are available at 5/1 with both Betfair and PaddyPower.

Considering the Liverpool are unbeaten in 60 home Premier League games, it’s no surprise that the bookmakers have come to those conclusions.

What’s more, with Arsenal failing to record a win at Anfield since 2012, this is certainly not a happy hunting ground for the Londoners.

When it comes to general form, both teams have enjoyed strong results in recent weeks. Liverpool won their opening two Premier League games having bettered Chelsea and newly promoted Leeds United. The Reds then went on to thrash Lincoln 7-2 in the Carabao Cup.

Arsenal, meanwhile, managed wins over Fulham and West Ham before picking up a 2-0 victory over Leicester City in the Cup.

Despite all this, our recommendation is to back the hosts to maintain their incredible home record. Recent games between the two clubs have been close contests which is why our best bet is to back a 2-1 win for the Reds at the current price of 13/2.
