When I do it, it always ends up everywhere and in every direction I didn’t want it to be.

It had never even occurred to me that there were different eye shapes and that that might change how you apply makeup. I’m obvi a beauty influencer over here, get ready for the launch of my YouTube channel — Makeup For Clowns.

Don’t be like me. If you’re a beginner check out these helpful eye makeup tips and make sure to learn more about eyeshadow application, eyeliner application and eye shape so you can really get your makeup done right.

A pencil eyeliner can be super simple to apply but because it is a pencil, it isn’t the smoothest and can have a rougher finish.

If you want something that’s matte and glides right on, you’re going to want to go with a gel liner. You might recognize gel liners — they often come in little jars and you use a liner brush to apply. I, personally, have greasy lids and have NEVER had success with these types of liners.

The golden ticket really sits with a liquid liner which gives you great precision. They tend to come in a pen shape with tips that vary. For the most part, they glide on with ease but just make sure to let them dry to avoid any transfer.

Not to brag or anything but I basically became a PhD in winged eyeliner after watching this.

Upturned eyes are very similar to almond-shaped eyes — they’re oval in shape but the outer edges have a natural upward lift. The lower lid also tends to be more prominent making it appear much longer than the top lid.

Promising review: “Do you want to create wings sharp enough to slay your enemies? If so, buy this. I purchased this in hopes that it would be as good as ‘Walk the Line’ by Hard Candy, which has been discontinued. IT IS WAY BETTER. This product stays all day. Application is easy and beautiful. I can create wings sharp enough to slay my enemies. 10/10 would recommend. And will purchase again.” —danielle b.

Round shaped eyes are just that, round. They’re less tapered than other shapes and you tend to see more of the whites of your eyes.

Promising review: “Great pigment and easier to use than I thought. Really good definition and not messy — the brush is great.” —Alexis wenger

Monolid eyelids tend not to have a visible crease, the skin folds on the upper eyelid so you don’t see that crease line below your brow area.

Promising review: “As someone with monolids, I always had a hard time finding the perfect eyeliner that won’t smudge and give me panda eyes. But this one is truly amazing! I had it on during the NYC summer heat, sweating all day but the eyeliner did not smudge nor disappear!” —Liam T.

Get the NYX Epic Ink Liner from Amazon for $6.99 (available in four colors and two application brushes).

If you have smaller eyelids, a cornea that’s hidden under the top and bottom lids, and eyes that are longer in width than rounded, then you probably have Almond-shaped eyes. The shape tapers at the tear duct and again at the outer eye.

Promising review: “Best eyeliner I have found so far. It’s easy to use for fine lines and wings. I have tried many other brands and I think this is the best bang for your buck. It coats nice and dark so you don’t have to reapply it and the applicator tip keeps its shape making it easy to control. It will smudge if you rub your eyes but I found a little translucent powder over it prevents this.” —talyn

Hooded eyes have excess skin folding down from the brow bone to the lash line. Many people have a variation of hooded eyes — some as a result of aging.

Follow along as Megan walks us through a winged eyeliner look on hooded eyes at 5:31.

Promising review: “I’ve used this eyeliner before but didn’t think it was worth the price. On a whim I purchased it again. Boy am I glad I did. This eyeliner is honestly amazing. I had to perform CPR on a patient, which is extremely strenuous, and it didn’t so much as budge. If it can survive that, then it can survive anything.” —Rachael

Downturned eyes have a downward tilt at the outer corners and can basically make your upper lid look much larger than your bottom lid.

Promising review: “I use this to help get straight lines on my winged eyeliner. This is a great tape to help achieve that line and it doesn’t feel like it rips your skin off when you take it off!! I would recommend this to help with those straight makeup lines!” —Sapphy

Get a roll Transpore Surgical Tape for $3.80 and get the Revlon Colorstay Skinny Liquid Liner for $5.97 (available in three colors) and the Zuzu Luxe Liquid Liner doe $15.60 (available in eight colors) she uses from Amazon.

I work pretty closely with Angie and I have to say, her eyeliner is always, ALWAYS absolute perfection. She probably thinks I’m a total creeper for constantly staring at it but luckily she’s my friend and doesn’t judge me…at least not out loud.

Promising review: “This color is soooo pigmented and very vivid! I love it so much, I use it on my lower lash line and it’s super cute. This bright color is guaranteed to garner you plenty of compliments!” —THC
