Violent protests in Washington broke out ahead of Congress certifying Joe Biden’s US election win. Video footage shows thousands of protestors storming the building and fighting police.

According to CBS News’ Margaret Brennan, Trump Cabinet secretaries are discussing invoking the Amendment to remove the president but so far nothing formal has been presented to Vice-President Mike Pence.

The 25th Amendment is a provision never used for the removal of a president before against his will.

It requires the vice president and “a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law” inform the Congress that the president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office”, according to the American Constitution.

In a statement, Jay Timmons, head of the National Association of Manufacturers and former member of the Senate leadership, labelled what happened on Wednesday as a “mob rule” and termed it “dangerous”.

He said: “Vice President Pence, who was evacuated from the Capitol, should seriously consider working with the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to preserve democracy.”

On Wednesday, in a video removed by Twitter and Facebook, Mr Trump said that he “loved” the protestors who stormed Congress and called them “very special”.

In another tweet also deleted, the president also said the protesters were “great patriots” who had been “badly and unfairly treated for so long”.

As a result of the demonstrations, the joint session of Congress certifying President-elect Biden’s victory was suspended and forced into recess.

After Mr Pence confirmed that the Capitol was finally secured, Congress reconvened and continued to move forward with Mr Biden’s certification.
