Donald Trump has said he was “outraged” by the attack on the US Capitol – and warned those who broke the law “will pay” for their acts of destruction.

In a video uploaded to his Twitter page, the president said tempers must be cooled and calm restored, adding: “This moment calls for healing and reconciliation.”

The tone of Mr Trump’s statement was markedly different from a video uploaded on Wednesday, in which he continued to allege that the presidential election was fraudulent.

He also stressed that his priority is now arranging for an orderly transition to a new administration – and said Joe Biden will be sworn in on 20 January.

Showing restraint as he spoke from a podium at the White House, Mr Trump added: “We must get on with the business of America. My campaign vigorously pursued every legal avenue to contest the election results, my only goal was to ensure the integrity of the vote. In so doing, I was fighting to defend American democracy.

“I continue to strongly believe that we must reform our election laws to verify the identity and eligibility of all voters and to ensure faith and confidence in all future elections.”
