Nick Kyrgios was overwhelmed with emotion Wednesday night after taking one of the most notable victories of his career at the Australian Open

Kyrgios saved two match points and then the competition for Ugo Humbert in a stunning open five-setter

The 25-year-old Canberran looked like a second round when Humbert started the match 5-4 in the fourth set

But Kyrgios dug deep with the help of a roaring crowd to win the epic encounter on Wednesday night with 5-7 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4

Unsure at first how exactly he got it out of his pocket, Kyrgios said a “crazy” atmosphere helped and the thought of facing the backlash if he lost

“I was scared to come into this room, you know,” he said in his post-game press conference

“(And) go to my Airbnb and just read about it and take it all in, take in all the negativity that I’ve already taken in

“It’s not easy to come back and try to leave it all behind. I’ve been through a lot and not just put my hand in a happy bath and disappeared”

World Nr47 looked shot after coughing four games in a row in the third and fourth sets, but it picked up with three stunning winners with the match on the line

Kyrgios spoke to his physical therapist after the game and said it was right up there with his best wins

“He saw me tank games, played epic five-setter, everything, and that was still one of the weirdest games for both of us,” he said

He had kind words for Humbert, whom he rated as one of the better young players on tour
