She’s done some interesting things after Gone Girl – most notably the bleak Western hostilities and another great, steely accomplishment in the woefully unannounced A Private War – but Pike didn’t quite get Amy’s cool blue fire until her last one reached movie, I Care a Lot, a mean little thriller on Netflix on Jan. February Pike was nominated for a Golden Globe to perform, but don’t let that put you off She’s another secret miracle in this film, cruel and clever.The rest of the film may not match its star’s height, but it still is an elegant and convincing highlight in an unpredictable season, anchored in one of the great performances of the year (at least so far)

Pike plays Marla Grayson, a fraudster who carries on her grim trade through the legal system.She submits to the lives of the elderly and the sick by becoming their court-appointed guardian, ostensibly to ensure these poor souls receive proper care and not being exploited by family members or other opportunists.The terrible joke, of course, is that corrupt caregivers like Marla – who exist in real life – are sucking dry the resources of these frail people trapped in a bureaucratic hell from which there is little recourse

Perhaps I am interested in the recent debate over framing Britney Spears, a New York Times television special (available on Hulu) describing the limitations of the mandatory conservatory of the pop star I Care a Lot on similar worrying subjects, but it is a lot More of a satire than a sober portrayal of societal illnesses The writer and director J Blakeson sometimes suggests a bigger meaning – but these are the moments when the film is baggy and clichéd and tries to find nasty depth to get out of the genre filth too The crap is really good enough

The movie works best as an amoral caper and indulges in fallout after Marla chases the wrong elderly lady.Retired businesswoman Jennifer (Dianne Wiest) seems to be the perfect sign: she has a big, beautiful house, lots of money the bank and apparently no family members. Of course, Jennifer has more to offer than meets the eye, an uncomfortable fact that Marla discovers when I am very concerned about chaos and danger

Blakeson stages with panache, orchestrating a few nimble set pieces that could presumably be described as action sequences.The script is sharp, although some things about Marla being a lioness among a flock of lamb are whistling, and some of the introductions to Marla’s world of Grift and accomplices might be a bit too on the nose

But Pike sells pretty much anything. She is indebted to Marla’s horror She never tries to shade the character in a more personable tone.She lets Marla’s defensive feminist stance – adopting the language of social justice to wriggle out of guilt or worse – stand for the manipulation that it is, that is not to say that we’re not pervertedly rooting for Marla – who is a horrible person in almost every way.Her uncomfortable appeal is part of the point and is spruced up by Pike and Blakeson, and there’s something satisfying about a nefarious little machine that hums like it’s supposed to America kind of depends on that thrill

Sometimes it’s very important to me to indulge in archness Peter Dinklage plays Marla’s main antagonist, and while he brings the appropriate gentle threat into the role, the insignia surrounding his character are goofy Marla’s details occasionally risk caricature, Which so obviously means evil with her tight bob and huge vape pen and crisp power suits Sometimes the lightning bolt from I Care a Lot disrupts his simpler pleasures Still, Pike storms through and evaporates the house, disarming command of her bulldozer of a character It’s a pleasure to see her do her thing, even if the thing is very bad. Pike deserves a lot more than just grooming – she’s ready for die-hard fandoms
