The protests came as a joint session of Congress began to confirm Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory

Supporters of the Republican President entered the building violating the Senate and the private offices of elected officials

When protesters stormed the entrances, the building was locked, forcing politicians, their staff and media representatives to seek protection

Others were evacuated from their offices and chambers to unknown locations as police worked to secure the building

Philly Inquirer’s reporter Jonathan Tamari, who was in the chamber of the house, said protesters broke the doors of the room to get in.

Maryland Rep. David Trone shared photos of himself on Twitter wearing a gas mask provided to confirm he was safe

Meanwhile, demonstrators in the Senate were able to enter the gallery and the floor of the chamber

Trump supporters also violated the offices of elected members of Congress, sat behind desks and touched their belongings

In a tweet, spokesman Kayleigh McEnany confirmed that the National Guard was “on the way” to help

Returning to the Senate Chamber just after 8 p.m. ET, Pence used his position as President of the Senate to condemn the protesters

“For those who wreaked havoc in our Capitol today, you did not win. Violence never wins. Freedom never wins,” he said, “Let’s get back to work”

Schumer called Wednesday “one of the darkest days” in recent history, adding that those responsible should be prosecuted to the “full extent of the law” “
