A previously announced positive case of COVID-19 in PE.I have been confirmed to be the B117 variant of the disease

The announcement comes as Newfoundland confirmed yesterday that the variant first identified in the UK was responsible for the recent outbreak in the province of PE.I am the last province in the country to confirm a case of the variant

“The detection of the B117 variant in P is no cause for concernEHowever, it is a warning sign that we should all stop and think about our own situation and ask ourselves if we are responsible for our actions “

Late yesterday, the Provincial Laboratory and National Microbiology Laboratory confirmed a positive case 4 announced in February was the B117 variant

The case, a man in his twenties, had a recent history of international travel. He remains in self-isolation and has been followed daily by public health officials

“This person did exactly what was required and after arriving at PE.I immediately went into self-isolation in a place separated and separated from others ”

The man arrived on the island on February 1 evening flight, Air Canada flight AC 8302 from Montreal Public Health Follows everyone on board who follow all isolation protocols Many have been tested this week

Four passengers who have since left the province will be contacted and tests will be arranged for three more people, Morrison

“At this point in time, there is no evidence that the variant strain of COVID-19 has spread to our province”

While no changes have been announced in the protocols, worrying variants like B117 are of concern as they are estimated to be between 30 and 80 percent more contagious than the original strain, making following existing protocols all the more important, Morrison

“If we let go of our vigil, we invite COVID-19 to prevail and continue to disrupt our families, our communities and our province”

“At this point, the mRNA vaccines seem to have good coverage against B117 or the UK variant and I don’t expect any change”

Earlier this week, Morrison said she believed the Atlantic Bubble could expand as early as Jan. April open again

“Whether it is a variant or not, the really important thing is to make sure we have good control over the transmission of COVID-19 in our provinces”

Given the success of the provincial proceedings to date, Morrison stressed the importance of quarantining and isolating travelers, as well as testing islanders with even mild COVID-19 symptoms at an early stage

When asked about the possibility of testing COVID-19 variants without sending them to the national microbiology laboratory, Morrison said there have been talks with Nova Scotia to do some of the sequencing there in the future, which one Faster processing would mean time to identify variants

During the briefing, Morrison also confirmed doses of the Moderna vaccine originally intended for P.I was reduced similarly to other provinces, but did not give specific numbers

There are four active cases of COVID-19 in P.E.I and the province have had a total of 114 cases since the pandemic began
