Kia’s newest EV is a real head-turner when it comes to design, and it’s quick to charge too

As expected, Kia this week revealed most of the specs of its highly anticipated EV6, the EV6 is a compact crossover with a cab profile and a trendy floating roof It shares its E-GMP platform and battery options with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 – but it won’t be an Ioniq 5 in a different package, the Kia version offers far more power

Get ready for 577 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque in the longest-range GT version, which is what the EV6 will deliver when equipped with a twin-engine layout and the longer-range 774 -kWh battery that allows you to sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in just 3 minutes, 5 seconds and up to a top speed of 162 mph

“The GT version of the EV6 demonstrates our technology leadership through the combination of excellent high-speed charging and acceleration performance like a super sports car. With our special EV platform, there is no compromise between inspiring spaciousness and performance,” said Albert Biermann, President and Head of the R&D Division of Hyundai Motor Group

In a more domesticated style, the EV6 is only offered with rear-wheel drive and a smaller 58 kWh battery, which should still offer it a lot of range

Kia says the rear-wheel drive model with the 77’s 4 kWh battery is still 510 kilometers on the WLTP cycle, the EPA number will likely land south of that, but the EV6 will continue to provide range numbers that are modern and for its size are reasonable. We don’t yet know what the shorter range battery will do, but it should still be north of 220 miles

When it comes to design, the EV6 features a sleek, sculpted profile with a floating roof in a contrasting color, as well as what is known as the digital tiger face, as you can see in the photos, the front of the car is pretty short with no engine in the front Rear, the EV6 will have a duck-tail-style spoiler lip with a wraparound red stripe that follows the contours of the trunk. You may also notice the flush-fitting door handles – a seemingly mandatory feature on electric vehicles nowadays – but our preferred design element has to be the shaping of the door sills, an area that has long been abused by car design studios in favor of flat profiles and the light line that starts at the foot of the front door continues to the trunk spoiler and goes directly through the exhibited wheel arches

“EV6 is the first dedicated Kia EV to be a showcase for human-centered, advanced design and electrified energy,” said Karim Habib, senior vice president and director of the Kia Global Design Center. “We firmly believe that EV6 is a compelling and relevant model for the new EV era, with EV6 we wanted to create a distinctive, impactful design by using a combination of sophisticated high-tech features for pure and rich volumes while providing a special EV that will define our future “

While the range of the two battery variants should be appropriate to the competition, the actual technological showpiece of the EV6 will be the 800-volt battery, which enables the EV6 to juice up from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes in one Another example, Kia says that the rear-wheel drive version has a 77A 4 kWh battery reaches a range of 100 km in less than four and a half minutes In addition, the battery can discharge up to 3.6 kW back in a vehicle-to-load function ( V2L), which can power a range of home appliances or charge another electric vehicle. This should make it a favorite for camping adventures or during times of power outages when it can act as some sort of generator (remember the Hybrid Ford F-150 who did this in Texas a few weeks ago?)

The interior promises to be no less advanced. Two curved 12-inch screens sit side by side on the dashboard and serve as the instrument cluster and infotainment screen An augmented reality head-up system (AR) displays additional information in the driver’s line of sight, e.g. by-turn navigation The EV6 will of course also enable wireless updates (OTA), as is the case with other recently launched electric vehicles, and it offers regenerative braking with six choices, from none to a pedal

The EV6 won’t be Kia’s first electric offering in the US – that honor goes to the Niro EV – but the Niro EV was essentially just a gasoline model that was supposed to offer an electric powertrain option. The EV6 will be different and should turn a new chapter for Kia when it comes to electric vehicles

It should be coming here in the second half of the year as a 2022 model, but reservations are now open.U.S. pricing for the EV6 should be announced closer to the model’s launch Until then, there should be plenty of competition here
