Campion, who died in December 2020 at the age of 69, has appeared regularly on the BBC cooking competition show and its spin-offs since 2006

In the semifinals, which will take place on Friday (2 April), guests Grace Dent, Jay Rayner and Jimi Famurewa gave their opinions on who should make the finals

At the end of the episode, the show paid tribute to Campion on the screen with the inscription: “Today’s Critics Table semi-final is dedicated to the late great food critic Charles Campion who sadly passed away at the end of 2020”

Viewers were emotionally impressed by the news, and one praised the tribute “a nice touch for a handsome man”

Another fan recalled Campion as “a great, knowledgeable reviewer who is greatly missed by anyone who sees MasterChef”

One of the country’s most respected food critics, Campion is survived by his wife Sylvia and two children, Ashley-Jane and Geoff, the cause of death is unknown
