Joanna Lumley has said she did not watch the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s one-sided television interview because she knew the royal family would not respond to the allegations they made

The 74-year-old actress told Jeremy Vine on his Channel 5 show that she was “terribly sorry” for the whole situation

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired in the US on Sunday night, Harry and Meghan made a series of bombshell claims about the gap between them and other members of the royal family

Meghan claimed she was denied help by palace officials when she turned to her about suicidal thoughts, while revealing that a family member raised concerns about how dark her son Archie’s skin tone might be

Lumley said, “It seemed a bit one-sided to me because everyone knows the royal family can’t really answer so I was anxious not to really see it

“I didn’t want to watch the program and haven’t seen the interview program, but you can’t avoid it because everyone is talking about it”’

Lumley said the interview “spread a bit of discomfort and unhappiness right when we were supposed to be spreading unity, positivism and lots of love”

She said: “First the country, now the world is on fire and thinks that this racism has continued

‘I don’t really want to talk about this because I know so many people have so many opinions and we are all working on half-truths, ideas and feelings, and I don’t think that’s a pretty serious debate about really this serious subject ‘

Lumley previously said on The Last Leg that the interview “aroused hate” and that she hates “public arguments”

Following the interview, Buckingham Palace released a statement that read, “The whole family is saddened by how challenging the past few years have been for Harry and Meghan

“The questions raised, particularly those of race, while some memories may vary, they are taken very seriously and addressed privately by the family

Prince William has since said he intended to speak to his brother, adding that the royals are “very much not a racist family”

While Lumley didn’t want to see the interview, many other celebrities have praised Harry and Meghan, including Beyonce, who praised Meghan’s “courage.”
