Sydney FC’s incoherent start to their title defense continued on Saturday night, despite the A-League champions showing many positive signs in a goalless draw against the in-form Brisbane Roar

The competition came to life in the last half hour when Sydney FC’s Rhyan Grant hit the frame twice within minutes at Sydney’s Jubilee Stadium

The Roar, however, had the opportunity to claim a win and further expand their winning streak in four games

The result put Brisbane in second place while Sydney – now with just three wins out of six games – remains fifth after playing two games less than their opponents

With a three-hour move from Sydney FC on the hour with returning strikers Bobo, Luke Brattan and Alex Baumjohann, the Sky Blues ended the competition with a wet sail, but the Roar defense remained determined

At the helm was the ever-reliable goalkeeper Jamie Young, who scored several key saves including Bobo’s rejection just minutes after the Brazilian returned to battle after a three-year absence

Bobo’s record of 52 goals in 71 games is the A-League’s best goal difference per game

Brisbane Roar entered the competition as arguably the best team in the competition The winning streak in four games brought an impressive record of 13 goals

But it wasn’t until the middle of the first half that one of the two goalkeepers was really tested with Roar-Custodian Young to fend off a Milos Ninkovic strike

Almost immediately, Andrew Redmayne saved James O’Shea on the other end when the contest was launched

The Sky Blues worked out an opening for Kosta Barbarouses after the break, but Young was quick to make an impressive block

Brisbane always seemed able to cause damage on the other end, and ardent goalscorer Dylan Wenzel-Halls got as close as O’Shea, who warmed Redmayne’s palms

Sydney FC’s three transfers in the second half set off a chaotic time, and within 60 seconds Grant had hit the bar

The Socceroo full-back hit the post just minutes later, and Bobo’s header in the following game seemed to be aimed until Young stuck a leg out
