North Queensland Cowboys Captain Michael Morgan has announced his immediate resignation due to a chronic shoulder injury

Morgan, born and raised in Townsville, played his entire NRL career with the Cowboys, collecting 168 games for the team

“It’s well documented the problems I had with my shoulder, and I’ve now got to the point where I can’t play with it anymore,” Morgan said at a news conference in Townsville

One of his career highlights was his role in the Cowboys’ first Premiership win in 2015, when he sent the pass to Kyle Feldt to score in the corner and extend the grand final against the Broncos into overtime

“Even though I wouldn’t have loved to finish, I had a chance to think about my career,” he said

“I was fortunate enough to play with and against some of my childhood heroes I was allowed to represent my state and my country and I was lucky enough to play in two big finals”

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to come in with my best friends every day for the past 11 years, and that’s what I’ll miss the most

“I know it was a difficult time right now, I know things will change I have full confidence in Toddy (Todd Payten), his staff and the playgroup”

He thanked all the coaches he had learned from over the years and his teammates for their friendship

“This club was created to give kids like me the chance to play in the NRL without having to chase him in a big city,” he said

“The fact that I was able to go through the system to run the club from the age of 15 makes me very proud”

“Bri has been with me on this trip for a very long time, she knows the roller coaster I rode and the struggles I had with my shoulder that she saw firsthand

“I think it’s a little bit easier for her to know that she doesn’t have to see me anymore”

Morgan last played the Dragons for the Cowboys in round two and said he has had a lot of support over the past fortnight

“There was one tackle in the Dragons game that I felt a massive crunch through my shoulder when it wasn’t feeling good, and scans confirmed it,” he said

“When I was past preseason, I did a lot with my shoulder, I made a lot of contact, I was confident where it was

“I’ve gotten to the point where I was very confident and satisfied with it and couldn’t hold up”

Cowboys trainer Todd Payten said it was difficult to put into words the success of Morgan’s career
