The Italians Fabio Fognini and Salvatore Caruso experienced a heated explosion at court after their brutal five-sentence epic

16 Seed Fognini got stuck in a jaw-dropping four hour bout that ended with a 20 minute tiebreak in the fifth set and won 4-6 6-2 2-6 6-3 7-6 (12) to advance the third round

When the two met on the net to shake hands, Caruso seemed to be mumbling something and waved his finger to his rival, against whom Fognini had objected

Then they started a long argument, yelling at each other from their chairs in Italian as they packed their bags

On Twitter, Italian tennis writer Luca Fiorino claimed that Caruso told Fognini he was “lucky” to win the match, “while another transcription of the conversation claims that Caruso insulted his opponent

“Fognini:” You were lucky (he used a colorful expression in Italian)! Apologize to me, “referring to some balls on the Caruso line: What do you say? I didn’t say a word during the whole game, I just didn’t expect it from you,” tweeted Fiorino

As Caruso walked past Fognini back towards the tunnel, the two continued arguing before they competed again

The tense moment came after Fognini had shown remarkable care to his compatriots and jumped the net to check on Caruso after he appeared to bump his ankle and scream in pain

After Fognini has proven himself to be the winner in the epic competition, he will prepare for a duel in the third round with Australian Alex De Minaur, who defeated Pablo Cuevas in straight sets on Saturday
