Jacinda Ardern paid tribute to 185 people who died in the Christchurch earthquake on Jan. Anniversary of the disaster were killed

The New Zealand Prime Minister said it had been “an extremely difficult decade for this city – sometimes I’m sure it felt impossible,” but she believed Christchurch was coming back

“When we look to the decade to come, I see hope, energy and optimism, and I see Christchurch taking its rightful place among New Zealand’s best and brightest cities,” she added

Ms. Ardern also said it was important to remember that 87 of the victims were foreigners and that some of their families were unable to attend due to coronavirus travel rules

The 6The magnitude 3 quake hit Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest city, at the age of 12 February 2011 at 51 p.m.

During the memorial on the banks of the Avon River, rescue workers were silent and others took turns reading the names of the victims

Lianne Dalziel, the Mayor of Christchurch, spoke about the 28 deceased Japanese citizens, most of the victims from a country outside New Zealand, others from Australia, the USA and China also died

“We are forever bound by this tragedy and do not forget, even if we are separated, you are with us in spirit,” she said

Another who spoke during the service was Maan Alkaisi, a university professor who tried for years to force the authorities to bring criminal charges against those who designed the CTV building, which collapsed while shaking and killed 115 people, including his wife Maysoon Abbas

A royal commission later found that the building’s design was flawed and should never have been approved

“Today reminds us of our responsibility to see that we learn from this tragic experience and honor the loved ones we have lost by making sure their dreams stay alive and that this does not happen again”

Thousands of buildings and homes in Christchurch were damaged by the earthquake, prompting the government to embark on rebuilding plans that will continue a decade later. Much of the downtown area has been destroyed
