Zac Bailey lived out the classic childhood dream, scoring a goal after the siren to give Brisbane a 1-point AFL win over Collingwood and end their week of hardship on a high level
The Lions had taken the lead 2-0 and were 25 points behind in the second quarter before beating 117 (73) to 116 (72)
The win was testament to the Lions’ character after being forced to stay in Victoria following a loss to Geelong last Friday in a coronavirus outbreak in Brisbane, Victoria
Brodie Grundy (28 exits and 54 hits) easily beat Tom Fullarton and Connor Ballenden, giving silver to Scott Pendlebury (30 touches) and Taylor Adams (25), while Brisbane’s Lachie Neale (23) and Jarryd Lyons (29 ) Grunts at the standstills
Collingwood’s Isaac Quaynor (24 hits) was largely up against Brisbane’s Charlie Cameron, while Joe Daniher scored three goals in an entertaining match with Darcy Moore
Daniher started the first goal of the game, but from then on Collingwood took control When Josh Daicos and Mason Cox scored two goals in the middle of the second quarter to extend their lead to 25 points, the Magpies seemed ready to go
But Brisbane found a foothold in the game and came to life late in the second season when Cameron avoided Chris Mayne with his back to the post and scored a brilliant goal
Daniher earned a free kick and really kicked it to cut the deficit to eight points at halftime At the beginning of the third season he contributed to another goal
Daniher took a hanger outside 50m and put the ball on the goal field where Cameron started over Jeremy Howe to mark and bring the Lions within two points
Mayne suffered a head blow in a collision with Cameron in the third quarter but passed his concussion test
The two teams traded goals last season, and Daicos’ second major at the end of the quarter appeared to have done enough to keep the Lions at bay
But when Daniel Rich jerked the ball to a leading bailey with 25 seconds remaining, the running defender seized the moment to kick off the season in Brisbane
