South Australia locks travelers out of the greater Melbourne area after more COVID-19 cases have been linked to a hotel quarantine outbreak in Victoria
The return of SA residents, resettlers and other exempted travelers would still be allowed, but would have to be quarantined for 14 days
“Great caution is being taken with our steps in South Australia to ensure that we minimize risk while not taking steps that are not considered necessary
“We will make these changes as soon as we have more information from the Victorian authorities”
After two new infections were discovered at the Holiday Inn quarantine hotel in Melbourne, the total number of outbreak-related cases rose to eight, including three workers, two released guests and a family of three no longer staying at the hotel
Authorities believe that a medical device in the family room could be responsible for the cluster
Nicola Spurrier, chief health officer, said she was “very concerned” about the Victorian outbreak, comparing it to the cluster in South Australia that resulted in an early lockdown
“We know what happened when we had the Parafield cluster here in South Australia,” she said
“But on the flip side, we’re in better positions across Australia. Our contact tracing is much more sophisticated
“I know, because we have very constant conversations with Victoria, that her contact tracing is absolutely fabulous. Your tests are really, really good”
