Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford says an announcement will be made Thursday regarding possible new COVID-19 restrictions in increasing cases and hospitalizations in the province

Ford made the remarks when asked during a press conference Wednesday why its government has been easing restrictions recently despite deteriorating trends

“Hold on, you’ll hear an announcement tomorrow, but I’m very, very concerned that the cases are surfacing,” said Ford

“I am very concerned about ICU capacity and we all need to be vigilant and during the next few days of vacation I am just asking people not to gather in large groups””

Health Minister Christine Elliott was asked about the announcement and said, “Everything is on the table and we have to keep saying tomorrow”

The president of the Ontario Hospital Association said Wednesday the number of patients in the intensive care unit, based on data from Critical Care Services Ontario, is 421, with 32 additional admissions on Tuesday

“This is the highest number of COVID patients in the intensive care unit since the pandemic began,” tweeted Anthony Dale

Ontario has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks333, which is the seventh day in a row that the number was above 2000 lay

Ford first announced Tuesday that the province was considering introducing additional restrictions to contain the spread of the virus

“Right now everything is on the table so people be prepared,” he said “I beg you, don’t make plans for Easter I won’t hesitate to lock things up”

Ford said Wednesday that “there is light at the end of the tunnel” with vaccines, but for now, people must continue to follow health guidelines

“We have only a few ways to go. It will still be a difficult task, but we will get there,” he said

“So let’s stay confident and we’ll get through this together and get back to normal””

Ontario has been easing restrictions in some regions over the past few weeks, including personal food restrictions in gray, red and orange restriction zones of the province’s color-coded pandemic response framework

On Monday, outdoor fitness activities were allowed in restricted areas, and the government had previously announced that on Dec. April personal care services may be opened

The province recently made changes to its “emergency brake” measure, which allows it to quickly impose restrictions on a region

The change allows the government to “close” a region with measures similar to January when most retailers were closed and only essential services remained open
