Jill (Duggar) Dillard and her husband Derick Dillard can thank Couples Therapy for teaching them tricks on how to deal with family drama, as they exited Counting On in 2017, in a new interview with Us Weekly, Jill revealed that things haven’t “gotten much better” since she and Derick decided to stop filming the TLC show, but that therapy has helped them cope with the shift in family dynamics

“It was one of those things we knew therapy would help with, but until we got to the point where we were desperate we didn’t dare actually sign up for it, “said Jill in a joint interview with her husband, who she married in June 2014 and has since welcomed sons Israel, 5, and Samuel 3” It was very helpful to learn to communicate as a couple and to know your triggers “

The couple first decided to get outside help after “a lot of transition” in their lives. “There was just a lot of things we worked on and then learned to develop boundaries with just one extended family,” explained Jill “[There’s] a bit of drama … At that point we said, ‘We really need someone outside of the picture to speak into our lives and help us make things happen'”

After Jill decided to quit her family’s show, a 19 Kids and Counting spin-off with sisters Joy-Anna, Jessa, and Jinger, Jill said that loved ones “didn’t have much support” when she decided to do this decided take the step she thought best for her family “We were ready to go and had a strong feeling to leave … there are definitely some problems there,” she added, “We are definitely feeling in a healthy place for now our family and are in control of our lives “

When it comes to her family, however, Jill admitted that “certain people are more supportive than others,” and that with a family their size, support “drains” over time. “Every family has one drama So when so many people are voicing opinions or whatever, it can get crazy, “she said,

Derick has been a vocal online critic of Jill’s father, Jim Bob Duggar, and repeatedly accused him on social media of failing to pay his children the appropriate cut on the family’s show income, in an October 2020 YouTube video, Jill confirmed the suspense and said there is “some distancing” going on with the Duggars. “We are not in the best shape with some of my family members,” she shared. “We have had some disagreements but we are definitely working on healing and recovery but we have to meet just take some time and heal “
