“Sometimes when you break up with someone and watch them live life with another partner it can be really frustrating I think this is a universal relatable thing that happens”, explains the young singer-songwriter

Olivia Rodrigo is with her new single “Deja Vu” from her upcoming debut album on 21 May on the go

Rodrigo begins the song with a series of romantic memories with a partner: “Car ride to Malibu / strawberry ice cream / a spoon for two”, she sings over an idyllic choir of la-la-las. She wonders if the new lover of hers former partner knows this is all she did to her ex “Do you get Deja Vu when she’s with you?” she asks in the chorus The song gets bigger over time and leads to a chorus of gang vocals on the bridge / outro “Play her piano but she doesn’t know / that I was the one who taught you Billy Joel / a different girl now but there is nothing new / I know you are getting Deja Vu “she sings

The video begins with Rodrigo driving around Malibu with strawberry ice cream before ending up in a mossy house. Inside, she sees a girl (played by Talia Ryder) trying on a green dress. After leaving the first house, she leaves back to her house and reveals that she has the exact same dress. From there, Rodrigo and Ryder swap places in the same scenes and outfits that Rodrigo sees them all on a pile of old televisions in. The video ends with the same opening scene, this time with Ryder driving the car

Rodrigo co-wrote the song with Dan Nigro, who also wrote their hit lead single, “Drivers License, the couple wrote the song in one day last fall and has played different versions of it since.” I’m really obsessed with the concept from Deja Vu and I think it’s such a cool, psychedelic, great thing, “she tells Rolling Stone Rodrigo on Deja Vu all the time, thinking it was a great metaphor for a relationship,” Sometimes when you break up with someone and him watching him lead the life he led [with you] with another partner it can be very frustrating. I think this is a universal relatable thing that happens, ”she says

Rodrigo released her debut single “Drivers License” in January. The song became a number 1 hit and ruled the charts until March. Before releasing her own music, the 18-year-old singer-songwriter came across Disney. She currently plays in the Disney series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series
