OTTAWA –
Ottawa-based Spartan Bioscience says its rapid COVID-19 test device was approved by Health Canada after the company had to recall and resubmit its product last year

The company had developed a wearable device that promised quick results and received federal approval in April 2020 However, the device was recalled a month later after Health Canada raised concerns about its effectiveness

Spartan resubmitted its device for approval in mid-December after several clinical trials in the United States and Canada, the company said

On Saturday, Spartan Bioscience said in a statement that it had received approval from Health Canada to sell its rapid test device

“The Spartan COVID-19 system offers the speed and ease of use of a rapid test using laboratory-based COVID-19 testing solutions technology,” the company said. “The Spartan system will be capable of remote communities, industries and environments with limited laboratory access Deliver high quality results, thereby relieving overburdened healthcare facilities “

The company calls its Spartan COVID-19 system “the first truly mobile rapid PCR test for COVID-19 for the Canadian market”

Roger Eacock, CEO of Spartan Bioscience, appeared on the CTV News Channel on Saturday and referred to the device as a Game Changer

“This is available and can be used anywhere power is available,” he said, “It’s fast, very small, and very accurate so we can get this distributed across Canada very quickly”

“After reviewing all known virus sequences of the new variants, it is expected that all known SARS-CoV-2 strains will be detected by the Spartan COVID-19 system,” he said

According to Spartan, the production of the test devices has already started and deliveries to federal and state governments as well as to trading partners would begin immediately
