CALGARY – The favorites set the tone in Friday’s championship pool game at the Canadian Women’s Curling Championship

With a couple of surprise teams making the eight-team cut, perennial rivals Rachel Homan, Kerri Einarson and Jennifer Jones posted afternoon wins and showed why they’re good bets to make it through to the playoffs

“If only three teams move forward, you can’t take a lot of losses,” said Jones. “So we know that and we know we have to play every game like we have to get that W and hopefully do well””

Homan’s Ontario team stole Ending a point for a 7-6 win over Chelsea Carey’s Team Wild Card One and then came back in an additional ending for an 8-7 win over Quebec’s Laurie St-Georges

Homan was 9-1 at the top and Einarson, the defending champion, beat Sherry Anderson of Saskatchewan 10-6 before knocking Carey out of the playoffs with a 9-3 win / p>

Jones’ Manitoba team earned a split that day to finish third 7-3 with Laura Walker of Alberta Jones scored a 12-8 win over Team Wild Card Three’s Beth Peterson before he dropped Walker a 7-5 decision

“I think mandatory is a good word for it,” Walker said of the win. “We needed it and I’m proud of the way we went out there and got it”

When Anderson was sitting with a nightcap injury, deputy Amber Holland threw fourth stones for Saskatchewan. She dropped Peterson a 10-9 decision that tied the two teams 6-4 against Quebec

Previously, Walker had beaten St-Georges 7-6 in an additional ending. Saskatchewan and Quebec had an unexpected share in Pool B’s lead after the preliminary round

Carey (5-5), who stands in for Tracy Fleury this week, barely missed a runback double takeout attempt with her last shot against Homan, who pressed two stones protected near the button. p>

“They hung out there with me and we ended up doing some good ones,” Homan said of teammates Emma Miskew, Sarah Wilkes and Joanne Courtney

Jones, who is aiming for a record title at the seventh Scotties Tournament of Hearts, stole on Jan. five points for their afternoon Einarson win was also tested early in this draw before a late duel sealed the win

Two more draws have been set for Saturday at the Markin MacPhail Center. The three best teams in the eight-team pool will reach the playoffs on Sunday

The teams with the second and third place meet in an afternoon semifinals around a berth in the evening finals against the team with the first place

The Hearts winner will return as Team Canada at the 2022 national playdowns in Thunder Bay, Ont. The champion will also take a spot in the Saskatoon Olympic Trials in November

The men’s national championship – Tim Hortons Brier – begins on May 5 March in the same venue of the Canada Olympic Park The Hearts is the first of six bon games that will take place in the arena through the end of April
