“Bridgerton’s” gossip columnist Lady Whistledown announced on Friday that season one heartbreaker Regé-Jean Page will not repeat his role as Duke Simon Basset of Hastings for season two of Netflix’ Hit drama Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem like a belated April Fool’s joke

“Dear Readers,” Whistledown wrote in a statement shared on the Bridgerton Twitter account, “While all eyes are on Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s search for a Viscountess, we say goodbye to Regé-Jean Page, the so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings

“We will miss Simon’s on-screen presence, but he will always be part of the Bridgerton family. Daphne [Bridgerton] will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother through the upcoming social season and offerings – more intrigue and romance than my readers can stand ”

“It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to be your Duke,” he wrote on Friday. “Joining this family – not just on-screen but off-screen too. Our incredibly creative and generous cast, crew, outstanding fans – everything has exceeded everything I could have imagined. Love is real and will just keep growing ”

Page quickly became the breakout star of the new season’s Shondaland series after his lively streaming debut in December. Saturday Night Live ”

Last week, Page received a NAACP Image Award for his romantic twist as a leading man in Regency England, and in February he received a coveted SAG Award nomination for a male actor in a drama series

Based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling author “The Viscount Who Loved Me,” the upcoming second season of “Bridgerton” will focus on Jonathan Bailey’s reformed rake of a bachelorette, Anthony (and his signature sideburns) in his quest for marriage (The first season was inspired by Quinn’s previous novel “The Duke and I”, hence the central role of Page)

Season 2 will star Bailey as “Sex Education”, who will make her “Bridgerton” debut as Kate Sharma, billed by Netflix as a “smart, headstrong young woman who doesn’t suffer from fools.” “The second season should start production in London in the spring

Since every book in Quinn’s saga revolves around a different member of the Bridgerton dynasty, the Duke is nowhere near as important as a gamer after his and Daphne’s love story is over. Still, the news of Page’s departure is to many that of the Duke burn and can’t imagine the series progressing without the biggest draw, an undesirable shock
