After both teams scored in the first half, the Russians scored three goals and finished the second with a 4-1 lead. The goal line would result in Americans pulling goalkeeper Spencer Knight

Knight, a selection of the Florida Panthers from the first round in 2019, allowed four goals in 12 shots before making way for Dustin Wolf before the end of the season

The Americans attempted a comeback in the third period with goals from John Farinacci and Trevor Zegras to bring the deficit to one goal

But an empty net goal by Yegor Chinakhov with a 21 second lead made the game out of reach for the Americans

The Americans will play against Austria on Saturday, while the Russians will be back in action against the Czech Republic on Sunday evening

Roman Faith scored a goal late in the third half when Slovakia beat Switzerland 1-0 in the opening game of the Junior Ice Hockey World Championship on Friday
