LOVELAND – There aren’t many better words in sport than “overtime hockey,” and that’s exactly what became of the Class 4A state championship between Battle Mountain and Crested Butte on Thursday evening at the Budweiser Events Center

Hunter Davis was the hero who scored a goal in extra time to lead Battle Mountain to a 5-4 win and its first state hockey title in program history

“I was thrilled,” Davis said of his game winner. “I never thought I would score a game-winning goal. I just wanted to make everyone happy, especially all seniors”

Matthew Solanik of Crested Butte scored a goal a few minutes into the game, signaling that Thursday’s final would be a barn burner

Battle Mountain goalkeeper Logan Gremmer had 22 goals in the semifinals and was one of the best goalkeepers in the state But it wasn’t easy in a fast-paced game of skill

“I think we’re going to be intimidated,” said Battle Mountain head coach Derek Byron of the first matchup between these two teams that the Huskies lost 5-1. “We weren’t scared tonight”

After the Huskies surrendered the first goal, they turned the swing around with a few power games in the first phase, and goals from Wyatt Horn and Tyler Knox turned the tide The Huskies left the Titans 10-5 in the first frame himself

Phase two was when things turned into a back and forth shootout. Crested Butte got a couple of power games in a row and both took advantage of Joseph Stock clearing one in front of the net and Solanik scoring his second goal of the game with one shot from half the wall to give his team a 3-2 lead

The Huskies fought back with Horn’s second goal of the game, but Crested Butte’s stick flew down the wing, going around the Battle Mountain defense and finishing his backhand to give his team the 4-3 lead after two spells / p>

“When someone scores or I make a cute save, all the guys are on board and they just love to get energy from each other,” said Gremmer. “That kept us going”

Sure enough, Battle Mountain found a way to tie it Jensen Rawlings showed his speed and tossed a puck into the zone around the blue line – a puck that found its way into the net to knot things at four

Gremmer made a couple more big saves in the third period, finishing the game with 31 shots out of 35, sparking Davis’ exploits
