As rifle season approaches in West Virginia, hunters consider many different factors when deciding where and how to hunt things like the weather, mast crop, hunting pressures, etc. Anything can make a difference what a hunter should do

One thing I rarely hear is the date that opening day falls. The gun season in West Virginia begins the Monday before Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday of November, not necessarily the last Thursday, which means Thanksgiving is somewhere between the 22nd of November and the 28 This in turn means that the opener in West Virginia on Nov. until 25 This can make a huge difference in deer activity, especially in areas with light hunting pressure Let me explain why

While it is possible to observe rutting activity almost anytime from September to February, the most intense rutting activity occurs in this area from early to mid-November.It is fairly easy to see how many deer, particularly beautiful bucks, appear during this time the road to be hit

When the gun season starts at the early end of the possible dates the rut is usually still strong, and when it opens towards the end of the possible dates the chase has often slowed down

How does this affect my hunt? If the season starts early I will try to observe as much area as possible, stand on funnels that are likely to flow through rutting buck, or even observe open and adult fields. If the season starts later, I have found the full grown ones Bucks are often “caged” with an adult deer and spend their time in the roughest, thickest terrain in a given area. They often don’t travel much so I’ll focus on this type of cover then

I hunted a friend’s property in western Morgan County that contained beautiful open hardwoods and steep, rugged hollows with ledges and laurel thickets. When the gun season started early, we often saw cute bucks chasing through the open hardwoods than it was later opened in the month, the stag appeared to move much less and stayed in heavy cover

This is also good to keep in mind when hunting later in the season, even if the season starts early

Since the gun season in West Virginia is on Jan. Starting this year, I’ll be surprised if the rut is still in full swing. It won’t be over, but probably not as intense as a few days before.I’ll adjust my hunting strategy accordingly. Of course, the deer don’t read the book or my articles, hence your mileage may vary Have fun Be sure Enjoy nature in our beautiful state!
