PARIS – Paris prosecutors announced Tuesday that French actor Gerard Depardieu was charged with rape and sexual assault in December after authorities revived a 2018 investigation that was initially closed

The office told The Associated Press that Depardieu was not arrested when he was turned on the preliminary charges dated December 16

French media reports said the charges relate to allegations made by an actress in her twenties through 2018. An initial investigation into the star was closed in 2019 due to lack of evidence, but was later revived

French newspaper Le Parisien and broadcaster BFM TV said the woman alleged Depardieu attacked her on August 7 and Aug. The two met when Depardieu was leading a master class at their school, reported BFM TV

reported on 13, 2018 at his home in Paris

The unnamed actress first filed a complaint in the southern French city of Aix-en-Provence in August 2018 with details of alleged rape and assault. The probe was taken over by Paris investigators but was soon dropped

Depardieu’s attorney, Hervé Temime, was not immediately available for comment, but previously said the actor “absolutely denies any rape, sexual assault, crime”

His first big hit in France was “Les Valseuses” (“Going Places”), Bertrand Blier’s classic farce about two wandering thugs

Before Depardieu crossed the Atlantic to play on the “Green Card”, he played a number of roles, from Jean Valjean, the thief who became a saint in “Les Miserables”, to Christopher Columbus

In 2014 he starred in “Welcome to New York”, the film inspired by the life of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former director of the International Monetary Fund who was accused of sexually assaulting a hotel girl in 2011
