In a letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla–– apparently a longtime Britney Stan –– and a member of the Freedom Caucus Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, cited the high profile case Covered by Spears, recently featured in Framing Britney Spears of the New York Times Present, as a prime example of how vulnerable people can be forced to hand over their finances to an exploitative third party, the couple argued that conservatories like that were placed under the Spears has the dangerous potential to deprive people of their civil liberties

“The House Committee on the Judiciary is tasked with protecting the rights that the U grant to Americans Constitution, “says her letter”These rights include the free will to manage one’s own affairs and legal autonomy over one’s own finances. When situations suggest that the government is unjustifiably depriving these rights, we have an obligation to take control and examine possible remedial action.”

“Ms. Spears is not alone,” continued Gaetz and Jordan”There are countless other Americans who have been wrongly deprived of their freedoms without having to resort to them. Given the constitutional freedoms and the opaqueness of these agreements, it is up to our committee to convene a hearing to see if Americans are wrongly in conservatories are caught “

“I think Britney would be a great witness,” argued the Florida Republican, “and would probably have a lot to say on the subject””

Jordan and Gaetz specifically questioned the motives of their father, Jamie Spears, who has been the legal curator of Britney Spears’ personal life since a court settlement in 2008

“The facts and circumstances leading to this agreement remain controversial,” the letter reads, “but involve questionable motives and legal tactics by her father and current curator, Jamie Spears.” At the time, Spears’ father had argued in court that many people took advantage of her in his daughter’s private life, hence the need for a conservatory, and Gaetz and Jordan pushed back by a statement from his attorney

In 2019, a social movement called #FreeBritney came together to work to bring Spears’ legal entanglement to light and free her

The letter also referred to the case of Daniel Gross, an elderly Long Island resident, who was involuntarily taken to a court-ordered conservatory and admitted to a ten-month nursing home despite multiple requests for release. The two congressmen also cite one 2010 GAO report citing a number of examples of legal guardians inappropriately accessing millions of dollars through conservatoires, with “hundreds of allegations of physical abuse, neglect and financial exploitation by legal guardians in 45 states and the world District of Columbia between 1990 and 2010 “

Gaetz told Business Insider that watching framing Britney Spears motivated him to address the issue. “After watching the Britney Spears documentary,” he said, “I reached out to a number of policy experts [] to refresh my understanding of the federal implications for the orderly process I am very familiar with the subject as a Floridian I was a member of the Justice Committee in the Florida House of Representatives and we have many elderly people being exploited in the guardianship process “

However, it remains unclear to what extent Gaetz and Jordan will make the Conservatory a part of their political platform, as they are apparently thoroughly preoccupied with keeping the Republican Party’s chaos and conspiracy – like making sure that OANN is on TV on the entire capitol remains hill
