Spoilers start after this photo, so buckle up to

Why, you ask, should David stay with Adele if she was causing him such misery? Good question. He’s tied to her thanks to a shared skeleton in the closet. Or, more precisely, a body in a well

Let’s rewind first. After Adele’s parents were killed in a fire, she recovered at a rehab facility called Westlands, where she befriended Rob (Robert Aramayo of Game of Thrones), who got down from a heroine addiction They became friends, connected through a dream journal (more on that later), and made mischief. Rob was a gay man and wasn’t romantically interested in Adele. He was, however, fascinated by her life

The friends’ first reunion in the outside world ended in tragedy Rob visited Adele and David in the charred mansion where she lived and where her parents died. When David returned after a day’s absence, Rob had already died, Adele explained, that they tried heroin and overdosed Rob. She put his body in a well – and accidentally dropped David’s watch (which she had been wearing), which made David appear like a potential murder suspect, Adele persuaded David to report Rob’s death, “Telling someone brings.” don’t give him back Nobody else knows he’s here, “said Adele

In the years that followed, Adele seemed unaffected by the loss of her friend. “She kept walking like it was nothing,” David tells Louise, and she threatens to report David to authorities if he leaves as soon as the final turn is revealed, this sequence is very different

You may have noticed Adele undergoes a drastic personality shift between the version of her in flashbacks – ebullient, naive, kind – and the version of her in the present – steely, manipulative, knife-wielding

In the finale we learn the cause of Adele’s transformation. When she told David the story of Rob’s death, Adele left out a very important detail: she was technically no longer herself

While in Westlands together, Adele taught Rob the art of “astral projection,” a new age concept that discourages a person from intentionally having an out-of-body experience and having a soul without a body travel around while Rob Visiting her villa, he encouraged Adele to change souls with him. He locked her soul in his body, killed that body with a heroin overdose and effectively took over Adele’s life

Pinborough’s novel explains Rob’s motives for the big Switcheroo in more detail: He wanted a love like David’s love for Adele “When [David] left to go back to university, I felt like my soul had been torn out. I felt empty myself didn’t want to live if I couldn’t have him Why should Adele have him? Simpering, weak Adele, who didn’t appreciate anything? Who took his love for granted? Who had all the money and doesn’t even care? If I had that and David , I would make sure his life shines, “explains Rob in the last chapter

Behind Her Eyes acts as a manual for astral projections and lucid dreaming According to the show, it is possible to conduct an astral project while walking through a door that appears while lucid dreaming. This allows Rob-Adele to keep track of David’s movements and his affairs pursue But there’s a catch “You can only travel to places you know,” explains Rob-Adele

David is constantly confused about his wife’s uncanny ability to know everything about his life. “Adele has a way of knowing things she shouldn’t,” he says to Louise Louise of course knows everything about Adele’s abilities: Rob- Adele has spent the season teaching Louise Astral Projection so he can make her his next victim

Ah yes The End The End Rob-Adele seeks a way to keep David in his life Rob-Adele finds a solution in Louise, David’s new lover. He just needs one way to become Louise

In the finale, Rob-Adele manipulates Louise to try to rescue Adele’s body from her burning apartment. Louise, who sits in front of the building, tries to astrally project into Adele’s body, Rob naturally captures Louise’s soul there, then kills Adeles Body overdosed heroine, just like he killed his own body years ago in Scotland. He transplanted his soul into Louise

From now on, Louise is Rob-Louise – what makes her reunion with David so cruel. What should be a happy ending is full of fear. Poor David is once again trapped in a marriage with Rob, and poor Adam has his loving mother lost forever

The miniseries ends with a terrifying look between Adam and his non-mother Louise. In the last full paragraph of the book, the subtext of this look becomes clear: hours after the wedding to David, Rob-Louise is already planning how to get rid of Adam

That ends Pinborough’s novel and we can imagine how Rob and Adam’s stories will end. Will Adam manage to outsmart the menacing Rob-Louise? Will David link the drastic changes in his wives to Adele’s cherished book on lucid dreaming? Only a second season of Behind Her Eyes could answer these questions. Unfortunately, the real Louise and Adele won’t show up: their stories have long since ended
