BOSTON (CBS) – A goalkeeper vows to protect the cage he stands in front of.It is a sacred vow that is only broken because of late penalties, game breaks, or desperate situations late in the game

Unless you were Tuukka Rask at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night Tuukka had drawn a minute from the end and was casually walking towards the Bruins bench when his team owned the puck in the neutral zone

Rask’s nonchalance stood out in the chaos of the game, and the Bruins bench broke out, urging the netminder to step back into his crease

Even then, Rask was in no hurry to get back into position, seemingly confused by everything that was going on around him

When the regulation ended, the TV show caught Rask laughing on the way to the bank and after the 3-2 win in extra time, Rask was able to explain what happened

“I just had to say something to Jaro [Halak] very quickly,” said Rask with a serious face

“I honestly thought we fell 2-1, that’s it, I thought we fell 2-1,” said Rask. “I’ve been waiting for [Bruce Cassidy] to wave me over there and I’m wondering : “Why the hell isn’t he? Another minute and a half, he doesn’t wave to me “And then I decided to come over when we had the puck”

Rask was so committed to his little vacation that it even confused some of his own teammates

“I thought we were having a power play,” Brad Marchand said with a laugh. “I started yelling at [Kevan Miller] to keep it up because we had a PP I didn’t see the referee behind us, me only saw Tuukks run away I was a little confused when Tuukks got back on the net. Luckily they didn’t take the opportunity. But I think Tuukks just tried to throw them all off ”

For Cassidy, he hadn’t received an explanation from Rask before speaking to the media, but the coach couldn’t believe Rask didn’t know the result

“I never talked to him about it at the end of the day so that’s a good question I think it’s one of those two, right? “Cassidy said when asked if Rask thought it was a late penalty or a goalkeeper pulled scenario, ‘You think he has access to the scoreboard so I would like to believe it was a late penalty I thought a few people on our bench thought that, but at the end of the day we made it ”

Sure, “you’d think he has access to the scoreboard” is a subtle zinger that was broadcast on purpose, but maybe Rask – who excelled in that game with 33 saves on 35 shots – was selected to have none Had time to look or think about any of the scoreboards displayed in MSG

Obviously everyone was smiling at the brainfart that’s the luxury of winning the game. But in the days and weeks ahead, on the practice ice and in the locker room, Rask could wisely expect some barbs from his teammates and coaches about this extraordinary mistake heard on national television

“You know, hey, it’s an entertainment industry I think and that’s exactly what we’re trying to do: entertainment for the fans,” said Rask with a smile. “I’m sure people were shocked at first, but hopefully did they make a good laugh out of it I really did it ”
