When Trump supporters rioted in the US Capitol on Wednesday, members of the mob were seen carrying Confederate flags while a man was wearing a hoodie that read “Camp Auschwitz”

A crowd of thousands of pro-Trump rioters broke through the Capitol on Wednesday while confirming the votes of the electoral college and suspended the process to confirm the victory of President-elect Joe Biden for several hours

The house was evacuated when numerous politicians and employees were forced to barricade themselves in offices to hide from the rioters, some of whom were carrying guns and others carrying weapons

The rioters broke through the Capitol after attending a rally held by Mr. Trump where he started the uprising with a speech, “We’re going down to the Capitol,” adding, “They have to show strength, and you have to be strong be ”

While the events were being held at the Capitol on Wednesday, a photo by photographer Mike Theiler of a rioter carrying a Confederate flag through the halls spread on social media

Stanford Professor Sam Wineburg noted in a post on Twitter that the image marked the first time in US history that a Confederate flag was publicly carried in the halls of the Capitol

Images shared by Washington Post reporter Rebecca Tan also showed a Confederate flag being hoisted by a number of rioters outside the Capitol as several other people carried the flags

Although the Confederate flag was first used during the US Civil War for the slave-friendly southern states, it won in the 20th century Century regained popularity as a racist symbol of resistance against racial equality and integration

Several Confederate memorials alongside Confederate flags were dismantled last year after protests against racial inequality when their links to slavery and racism were reviewed

Although a 2020 YouGov poll found the Confederate flag represented racism for 41 percent of Americans, Mr Trump has defended people’s right to hoist it, telling Fox News on Sunday in June 2020, that this is a source of pride for those who love the southern US

The Confederate flag was not the only symbol of racism displayed during the uprising on Wednesday One man wore a hoodie that said “Camp Auschwitz” while groups outside the Capitol hung from noose

The hoodie referred to the concentration camp that operated in Nazi Germany during World War II and where more than a million Jews were killed during the Holocaust

On the hoodie was the sentence “Work brings freedom” based on “Arbeit Macht Frei”, which was written in front of the gates of Auschwitz

At least two nooses were also hung outside the Capitol during the riots when cables stolen from journalists about the riot were turned into a makeshift noose

Violence against the press has been advocated by rioters because, according to Buzzfeed News, “Media murder” was written on a door in the Capitol

Four people died in the riots on Wednesday and several police officers were injured by members of the pro-Trump mob. Several US officials have called for Mr Trump to be indicted after the riot

The last time the US Capitol was breached on the order of Wednesday was during the war in 1814
