Ollie Watkins was almost speechless after sealing his debut in England with a goal against San Marino at Wembley

The Aston Villa striker, who made his first call to the Three Lions squad this month, was substituted on in the second half before scoring the final in England’s 5-0 win

And after discussing how gambling would seal a childhood dream for England earlier this week, the ex-Exeter City and Brentford man was equally humble after the game

“All day at the hotel I was just thinking, ‘I hope I get a chance, just enjoy it and get the opportunity to score at some point’ but I didn’t know it was going to happen

“I’m just honored to get out of here and get the chance to put this shirt on and play with the players I play with”

“Even to score on my debut I couldn’t write it and am overjoyed to be honest”

With three games in that international window and two more against Albania and Poland next week, Watkins admits that he initially set his sights on an international

“I didn’t even know if I was going to come – obviously Conor [Coady] was having a head fight and I thought I might not get the chance to come tonight. But I have it and I just can’t believe it and me am grateful that I had the opportunity to play here

“I just have to take every game as it comes now – focus on my club football, play consistently for Aston Villa, score there and help my team move up the table and hopefully get to Europe and then to see where we go from there “

The Three Lions squad will be in action next Sunday when they travel to Tirana to face Albania (5pm GMT) with the game live on ITV in the UK
