Billy Connolly is best known for his stand-up comedy, but that doesn’t live up to his range of artistic talents. Billy is also a musician, presenter and actor with a special place in British culture and post-Parkinson’s support -Diagnosis in 2013 is evidence of its widespread appeal

In a one-off special titled Billy Connolly: It Was a Pleasure, which aired last December, the funny man addressed his state of health with characteristic candor

Regarding his Parkinson’s disease, he said, “It got me and it will get me and it will end me, but that’s okay with me”

“I started low and ended high Just staying up there until it’s time to quit seems like a natural and good thing It’s good to be proud, I wanted to be a funny one and I got it”

He said, “It’s been a pleasure talking to you all these years. From the start when I was a folkie, I couldn’t have done anything without you. You were great”

Connolly had to take time off his busy career, touring the world and selling out arenas when Parkinson’s meant he couldn’t really remember his stories

Parkinson’s disease is a disease in which parts of the brain are increasingly damaged over many years

It is not known why the nerve cell loss associated with Parkinson’s disease occurs, although potential causes are currently being investigated

According to the Parkinson Foundation (PF), most experts agree that Parkinson’s is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors

As the PF explains, some environmental factors can lower the risk of Parkinson’s disease while others can increase it

“Similarly, some people may have genetic makeup that makes them more susceptible to the effects of toxic substances than others”

Researchers believe that a combination of factors can trigger biological changes that ultimately lead to Parkinson’s disease
