The discovery of an old stone circle has a myth from the 12th Believed in the 19th century that the original Stonehenge was actually built in Wales

The ancient myth was first recorded 900 years ago by Geoffrey of Monmouth and tells a story of the wizard Merlin who brings men to Ireland to conquer a magical stone circle and rebuild it in England as a memorial to the dead

The report has long been dismissed as a forgery, but archaeologists have now discovered a stone circle in a part of Wales that was once considered Irish territory and the legend could prove more than just a myth

A series of Neolithic buried stone holes following the outline of the circle have been exposed. The shapes of the holes can be associated with Stonehenge’s famous bluestone pillars, one hole bearing an imprint that resembles a cross-section of a Stonehenge pillar “like a key in a castle, “said one of the archaeologists

At 110 meters, the diameter of the circle is identical to the ditch that surrounds Stonehenge, like Stonehenge, the Welsh discovery is geared towards the sunrise at the summer solstice

Mike Parker Pearson, Professor of British Prehistory at University College London, told The Guardian, “I’ve been researching Stonehenge for 20 years and this really is the most exciting thing we’ve ever found”

He added that Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Legend may contain a “tiny grain” of truth, saying, “My word, it is tempting to believe We may have just found what Geoffrey called the Dance of the Giants ”

The discovery supports a centuries-old theory that Stonehenge was actually first built in Wales, where it remained for hundreds of years before it was demolished and moved to Wiltshire, where it was rebuilt as what is now known as the Stonehenge

A century ago geologist Herbert Thomas suggested that the Stonehenge Pillars came from the Preseli Hills of Pembrokshire, where they once formed a “revered stone circle.”

At the time, the theory was dismissed, but the new finding in Wales is only three miles from the Preseli quarries where Thomas suspected the stone was being mined

Parker Pearson and his team have been searching for evidence to support this theory for several years, and believe this latest find proved Thomas correct
