Former Brighton rugby player / coach and Sussex teacher Gary Halpin has died at the age of 55

The Irish international and the London Irish and Harlequins professional won eleven caps for his country between 1990 and 1995 and were part of the squad for the 1995 World Cup in South Africa

Front row striker Halpin scored a famous attempt against New Zealand in the pool stage of the 1995 World Cup

After retiring in 2001, he became a teacher and spent seven years at Newlands School in Seaford until it closed in 2006 There he taught geography and was head of rugby

During the 2001/02 season he was also a player / coach at Brighton Rugby Club, where he coached the front row forward

John Newman, former Newlands deputy director, said: “Gary was rugby director at Newlands School in Seaford for several years until it closed

“He was a great character and colleague and a strong teacher both in and out of the classroom He was known for his wit and incredible rugby coaching which influenced many people’s lives

“I wish Carole, his wife and children, a lot of compassion in these difficult times”

He said at the time: “Brighton is in a good line-up and I really wanted to keep playing rugby out of love for it

“I enjoyed being a pro but there were things that I didn’t like. Playing for Brighton is like going back to my roots

“It doesn’t matter for a prop anyway. You never get the ball, no matter what level you play!”
