Plans have been approved to create the world’s first landmark scheme demonstrating Britain’s global leadership in hydrogen technology. Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer

The Chancellor yesterday (3 March) Freeport confirmed as one of eight who will receive assistance if he delivers his household speech

While other select Freeport projects are undoubtedly great projects, Freeport East also offers another great opportunity in the form of hydrogen, which has been welcomed with open arms by many industry veterans

With what JCB heir Jo Bamford believes is the most significant hydrogen project in the world, Freeport East will include the development of a green hydrogen hub using hydrogen to power port facilities

The hydrogen hub also has the potential to serve road, rail and sea transport, and offers the opportunity to expand hydrogen consumption in other freight companies

Yesterday’s support will also help make this part of the project a reality in the short term

George Kieffer, Chairman of the Freeport East Project Board, welcomed the news and said: “We are delighted that the Chancellor has been selected as one of the first new free ports in the UK in a number of years. Freeport East offers a unique opportunity to be a truly global one Build a commercial center while accelerating green energy opportunities and stimulating the economy ”

Clemence Cheng, Executive Director of Hutchison Ports, added: “Freeport East is the perfect place to develop a new Freeport Given its location on major global shipping routes and frequent connections to Europe, it’s the ideal place to attracting foreign investment ”

“It has 50% of the UK’s offshore wind capacity on its doorstep In cooperation with our partners, we will help to promote the development of green energy for use in the transport sector as well as in the entire economy ”

Jo Bamford, Ryse-Hydrogen Executive Chairman, welcomed the news of a project he believes will offer a number of hydrogen opportunities for the UK and said: “The Prime Minister has said the UK is making a big bet being hydrogen and the green light for the Freeport East Hydrogen Hub is an important step in putting these words into practice ”

“The Freeport East Hydrogen Hub will help create thousands of green jobs and provide innovative applications in hydrogen for zero-emission buses, construction equipment, shipping and agriculture. Crucially, these UK-made Net Zero technologies are deployed within 12 months and will put East Anglia at the forefront of the global hydrogen economy “

Adam Bond, CEO of AFC Energy, also welcomed the decision: “Free ports have the potential to become major trading hubs for the UK, boost foreign investment, create jobs and drive the country’s economic recovery”

“As part of the government’s drive to ‘rebuild better’, we believe it is critical that these free ports are developed in a sustainable manner and that the opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the use of low carbon technologies – especially in the port – are used -side operations and the maritime sector as called for in the UK’s Maritime 2050 Strategy ”
