A jury will hear an opening argument later today in the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin

The trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin begins today, ten months after the death of George Floyd sparked global protests against racial justice

After two weeks of selection by the jury, the prosecution will open their case today, arguing that the fatal encounter amounts to murder

The jury is expected to be shown a video of Chauvin with his knee on Mr Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes during his arrest in May after Mr Floyd, 46, allegedly put in a counterfeit $ 20 bill used a business

The footage was shared online and viewed by tens of millions of people, sparking protests and demonstrations both in the US and around the world

Prosecutors have not said when they will play the video, but legal experts expect it to be at the beginning of the trial as they want to remind the jury what their case is about, according to Reuters news agency >

“If you’re a prosecutor, you want to start strong – you want to frame the argument – and nothing frames the argument in this case like this video,” said Jeffrey Cramer, former federal attorney and executive director of the Berkeley Research Group in Chicago. p>

Mr Floyd was pronounced dead after the 45-year-old chauvin struck his knee against Mr. Floyd’s neck had been squeezed

He stayed in that position even though Mr. Floyd’s “I can’t breathe” screams subsided and he went limp while handcuffed and lying on his stomach

During a complex jury selection process, many of those selected informed Hennepin District Judge Peter Cahill and attorneys on both sides that they recognized the test their deliberations would fall under

The trial is expected to take four weeks and the Minneapolis courthouse has been fortified with concrete barriers, fences, and barbed wire

City leaders and heads of state are determined to prevent the riots from recurring after Mr Floyd’s death, and National Guard forces have already been mobilized

The main questions at the trial will be whether chauvin caused Mr Floyd’s death and whether his actions were appropriate

Philonise Floyd, George Floyd’s brother, said before a church service that he had confidence that attorneys from the Minnesota Attorney General would convict chauvin

According to court records, the jury, including three deputies, consists of six white women, three white men, three black men, one black woman and two women of mixed ethnicity

“I am grateful that the jury is diverse,” said Paris Stevens, a North Carolina nurse cousin of Floyd, the Associated Press in a telephone interview

“I’m very concerned because you don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m just glad this process is beginning”
