The Perseverance Rover landed on Thursday evening (18 February) on Mars It will now begin its search for signs of alien life, Nasa revealed you can still catch all of the action in one neat highlights package created by the space agency

The rover landed in “a nice flat spot,” according to Landing Team Leader Allen Chen, who confirmed the rover was safe and ready for use

“We have successfully found this parking lot and have a safe rover on the ground,” he said “I couldn’t be more proud of my team if I did this”

Endurance landed at 8 a.m. Thursday evening at 55 p.m., which was greeted by a cheering choir in the NASA control room

Controllers were separated by clear screens to maintain social distance, but the excitement was still for everyone to see

Moments after the landing was confirmed, the rover sent the first two images of the Martian surface back to Earth

Dust covered large parts of the image, but it was still possible to see a flat surface in front of the vehicle

In the early morning on Friday the 19th February, Nasa revealed its highlights of the Perseverance landing

It contained the exact moment when the Mars rover touched down and moved the control room into the Pandemonium

The Mars rover took off on 30 July 2020 from Space Force Station Cape Canaveral in Florida

The plan was to use the rover to collect Mars samples and then bring them back to Earth

Scientists will use the samples to look for signs of ancient microbial life that would provide definitive evidence that life once existed on the Red Planet

Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Science Administrator at Nasa, said: “With today’s exciting events, the first pristine samples from carefully documented locations on another planet are another step closer to returning to Earth

“But what they could tell us is monumental – including the fact that life might once have existed beyond earth”
