One in ten songs streamed worldwide is by a British artist Numbers have shown acts from Ed Sheeran to AC / DC are finding new audiences

Analysis of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) global chart data found that British performers are reaching music markets previously out of their reach, including countries in Asia, South America and Africa

Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, Adele and Dua Lipa were the most streamed artists of 2020 along with Sam Smith, Lewis Capaldi, the Beatles and Queen

Record labels ‘ability to digitally market acts via social media has helped transform international stars into new acts, including Jorja Smith, 2018 Brits Critics’ Choice Award winner, and Dave, the rapper who dated Sir David Attenborough has teamed up this year to provide the soundtrack for a Planet Earth special on the BBC

The major UK record labels currently have a list of 640 acts on their books – up 68 percent from 2010 – and spent more than £ 150 million on international marketing and advertising last year

Meanwhile, young listeners around the world are discovering heritage acts like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and AC / DC thanks to the ease with which people can stream individual songs

Other popular artists around the world, according to BPI, have included Stormzy, Little Mix, Ellie Goulding, The 1975, Coldplay, and Arctic Monkeys It is estimated that the top 100 UK artists generate 100 billion audio streams every year

“Easy access to UK music through streaming services and global label promotion means more UK artists are now connecting with more fans to build international careers. A key component of this success is the signing and development of artists through record labels and their successful global marketing, ”said the BPI

According to the BPI, which represents 450 UK-based record companies, the UK’s share of global streaming is four times its share of global GDP

Fast growing international markets for British acts include Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Nigeria and Ghana

In the more established Western markets, British laws made up 172 percent of the flows in Belgium, 97 percent in Germany, 73 percent in Italy and France, and 7 percent9 percent in the US

Geoff Taylor, Managing Director of the BPI, said: “As the UK sets its course as an independent trading nation, music serves as a symbol of the UK’s economic potential and creativity

“A new wave of local talent, supported by the labels’ support, is bringing UK culture and business to every corner of the world This is a new tune for a new age of opportunity We are excited about the possibilities that streaming offers for our artists and for the continued growth of British music ”
