Clear skies over Britain gave photographers of all abilities and sizes the perfect opportunity to photograph what is known as the Snow Moon

The results have often been spectacular Many avid camera operators (and bare eyeballs) noticed how bright Earth’s natural satellite appeared

One of the most popular, captured by PA photographer Peter Byrne, featured the full moon rising behind Rivington Pike near Bolton in Greater Manchester

It uses a mysterious optical effect that makes the full moon appear larger near the horizon

BBC news anchor Sophie Raworth posted her photo with extra wings with the comment: “I need more practice (and a real camera)“She awarded her personal“ Full Moon Award ”to a video of a flock of birds soaring over Eastbourne Pier

Some Twitter users took the opportunity to punctuate “Snow Moon” by posting a clip from Star Wars. As Luke Skywalker and his companions approach the Death Star, Obi Wan Kenobi says, “This is not a Moon It is a space station ”

The snow moon, as it is called in the northern hemisphere, is the second full moon of 2021 and typically symbolizes the beginning of spring

It will reach its maximum fullness at 8am on Saturday at 5pm GMT, but will still appear full on Saturday evening unless a streak of cloud over northern England obscures
