The 73-year-old singer is withdrawing from the tour and after his last concerts – which were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic – he would like to take over a small residence somewhere and the darker tracks from his Playing back catalog because he’s tired of playing the same hits night after night

He said, “I’m lucky enough to play so many great songs every night. But there comes a time when you think, ‘I don’t really want to play this anymore’

“There are things like ‘original sin’ or ‘(I need to get a) meal ticket’ that I haven’t really played before – not enough anyway

“But when I have to go back and play ‘Crocodile Rock’ again it’s like ‘I’m going to kill myself’

“After finishing this tour I don’t want to play some of these songs anymore

“I’d love to do something like Kate Bush where I can do a show and play some of those songs that are deep cuts”

Hitmaker “Tiny Dancer” has played with a number of great artists over the years, and recalls finding himself in the presence of “true greatness” that was often so overwhelming that he was “scared”

He told Record Collector, “I just loved [Aretha Franklin] She sang her last show at our AIDS Foundation 2017 in St John the Divine Cathedral

“I’ll never forget because I was on stage with Roseanne Cash and Sheryl Crow and we just cried because she played the piano and was so sick and yet she came and did bridge over Troubled Waters’

“And after that, she said, ‘This is what I’ll never sing again – this is the last thing I’ll ever do'” But those are the moments that you know you are great Sometimes that’s terrifying

“I was so scared of Nina Simone when she played her last Carnegie Hall show in 2003, I was hired to look after her with Patti LaBelle and in the end they sang ‘Young Gifted and Black’ and she’s sitting in the chair and that Whole audience got up and they cried And I cried Everyone cried

“Ray Charles made his last recording with me when we did ‘Sorry seems like the hardest word’

“I’ve had a lot of these moments in my life and the bottom line is you have to step on your plate or you’ll be left in the dust
