A married teacher who groomed and had sex with a 15-year-old boy on Snapchat was sentenced to six and two months in prison
Kandice Barber, 35, of Wendover, Buckinghamshire, had been convicted of inducing or inducing sexual activity in a child
In a trial in January, she was found not guilty of two other cases of the same crime
The court heard that the teacher added herself to the victim’s Snapchat account in September 2018 and exchanged messages with the boy that became sexual within a week
The judge convicted at Aylesbury Crown Court described how Barber sent victims pictures “including a topless picture” and live video of a sexual act
“All of these acts mean that you maintain and involve him, and that you have significant planning”
The court heard that Barber later asked the boy to meet her, go to a private field, and have sex with him
The judge said: “I have no doubt that you have committed a gross breach of trust
“You have taken advantage of a child in your care and cared for it for your own sexual satisfaction”
Barber later asked the boy to delete all messages and block them on Snapchat to prevent evidence from being found, the court heard
Barber had to be tried a second time after an initial trial failed to deliver convictions on three charges
In a statement from the victim read by prosecutor David Povall, he said the stress and fear of the trials had caused “worse than expected GCSE results”
This resulted in the victim “dropping out of the good school he attended and attending sixth grade college that none of his friends were”
Mr Povall said, “In summary, [the victim] says that the accused who was supposed to help students make the right decisions instead helped them make the wrong decisions”
Barber was also sentenced to 16 months ‘imprisonment for inducing a child under the age of 16 to observe sexual activity by an unfaithful person and an additional 10 months’ imprisonment for sexual communication, serving at the same time as her main sentence Became
She has to keep the police informed of her personal information and addresses for the rest of her life, is not allowed to work with children and vulnerable adults, and is subject to a lifelong order to prevent sexual harm
Following the conviction, the NSPCC stressed the need for appropriate support for victims of child sexual abuse
A charity spokeswoman said: “As a teacher, Barber would have been aware of the vulnerability of young people and it was her duty to protect those in her care
“But instead, she used her trust to groom and abuse this teenager for her own sexual gratification”
