What the sequel to Eddie Murphy’s iconic 1988 film lacks in originality and loud jokes it makes up for in a barrage of celebrity appearances. The fictional land of Zamunda may be out of date in its approach to equality, but, Boy, do you love the rich and famous that occurs there

After watching about a quarter of Coming 2 America, you can predict what will happen in the rest of the film in the sequel to Eddie Murphy’s 1988 classic Coming To America, in which Prince Akeem is obscured from the fictional African country of Zamunda travels to New York to find his bride, the new movie doesn’t have to do much to get people to watch The original movie is so popular that people just tune in to the nostalgia you won’t be disappointed with with flashbacks and self-referentials Joking about how awful sequels are, Coming 2 America puts the right emphasis on making a good, watchable sequel. But it won’t blow anyone away, either. However, there is one secret weapon that will keep you entertained throughout the entire hour and 50 minute run: a nearly constant stream of celebrity cameos

But before we get on the royal red carpet for Coming 2 America, what is Prince Akeem doing these days? Well, he now has three daughters with his wife Lisa, whom he met in New York. His daughters are smarter, faster and stronger than him, anything but suitable heir to the throne, but when Akeem’s father, played by James Earl Jones, dies, finds out he that a woman cannot be his successor But as luck would have it, it turns out that Prince Akeem has a secret son in New York! How convenient as a product of a one night stand, he rushes to the US to bring his heir back to Zamunda and train him to be ready to take the throne if Akeem dies, his eldest daughter is furious and his new son is delighted with his royal snow groomer in place of the woman standing in line for him to get married You see where this is going, right?

Between slightly terrifying jokes containing words like “fleek” and making fun of identity politics, there are a few moments in Coming 2 America that might inspire an internal “ha”, but we all know Eddie Murphy is into that The problem is that after Wakanda came to life on screen in Black Panther and Beyoncé picked Africa’s best creatives for Black Is King, Coming 2 is America’s vision of an African country with antiquated values Zamunda hasn’t moved on since 1988, and aside from learning the modern slang, it doesn’t seem like the writers of the film either did, which is two decades late

So it’s up to the movie’s cameos to create a shining jewel in the crown of this one that loves a party scene, and each one comes out with a new line of formidable celebrities to make up for not just Akeem’s guests, but that too Audience entertaining En Vogue and Salt-N-Pepa meet at Akeem’s father’s funeral for a rendition of “What A King” (the original song is “What A Man”) Morgan Freeman gives a not-so-emotional eulogy Gladys Knight throws then shadows through the song by singing, “This nation’s only hope is a son who can’t have a son of his own. This all happens in less than five minutes during the first party scene

Coming 2 America with Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan and Teyana Taylor in a small role is basically a who-is-who of black Hollywood kings and at a time when discussions about diversity are at the fore on the big screen, The movie’s strongest asset While the movie isn’t particularly groundbreaking, it’s nice to see all of these people enjoying a project that recognizes the legacy of the original as one of the top grossing films with African American Is Coming 2 America Black Excellence? Not really. But not everything has to be excellent to have fun

Sure, Coming 2 America is cheesy, formulaic, and heavily reliant on its predecessor’s reputation, however, it’s also occasionally heartwarming, joyful, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. That being said, I ask Hollywood to resist the temptation to make a third movie to give the green light You have already used all good cameo opportunities There is simply no one left to do another sequel

We’ve rounded up the best series and movies on Amazon Prime to save you from endless scrolling and indecision when deciding what to watch tonight
