FA Cup champions have asked for the game against West Ham to be postponed after four players tested positive for Covid after their trip to Dubai

Manchester City’s request to postpone the women’s Super League game this weekend became more urgent on Wednesday as the player crisis deepened and Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle were unavailable due to US national team duties

Four City players tested positive for coronavirus earlier this week after traveling to Dubai with the club’s Tier 3 permission during the winter break, it is believed the club has asked the FA to suspend its game against West Ham to push back this Saturday

An announcement by the US squad on Wednesday made City manager Gareth Taylor’s selection problems worse than previously thought. If the game continues on Saturday, he will also have to do without Lavelle and Mewis, who have been confirmed for a training camp in the US until 22 January runs

In three days he has six players less than a full squad for their game and without the American duo on two WSL weekends and in the quarter-finals of the Continental Cup next week against Chelsea

In a press conference on Wednesday, US head coach Vlatko Andonovski said the news was “nothing new” to City as Lavelle and Mewis’ contracts allowed them to attend the January camp mid-season

“I’m in constant communication with Gareth,” said Andonovski, “it wasn’t a problem, we all agreed it was a good camp for her”

Meanwhile, Manchester United was strengthened on Wednesday by the news that their American striker Tobin Heath had left Andonovski’s training camp to continue their club duties

Despite City’s prior knowledge of Lavelle and Mewis’s planning, the timing of their absence alongside the club’s Covid-19 outbreak could prove crucial to a close chase with four clubs, fourth-placed City is eight points behind leaders Manchester United , albeit with a game in hand

Second place Arsenal are managing their own Covid outbreak after players traveled to Dubai over Christmas

As reported by Telegraph Sport, they have also filed a request with the FA to postpone their weekend game against Aston Villa

Telegraph Sport believes that while it is not yet clear whether the FA has ruled either game, both will be ready to move on as of Wednesday afternoon, sources have indicated that all teams are expected to do theirs Meet games unless they can’t pitch a team
