BOSTON (AP) – President-elect Joe Biden will select Boston Mayor Marty Walsh as his labor secretary and select a former union worker who will bring his Irish-American background and roots in the United States, according to a source familiar with the decision Working class divides

Walsh, 53, has been the Democratic Mayor of Boston since 2014. When he took the oath of office for his second term as Boston chief executive in 2018, Biden led the inauguration. His selection was confirmed by a person familiar with the decision, who on the condition of Anonymity spoke

Walsh, a former union worker, has a long history of work. He was president of Laborers Local 223 and, before becoming mayor, ran the Boston Building Trades – an umbrella organization of the unions

On Walsh’s second inauguration as mayor, Biden praised him for his character and efforts to build a thriving middle class, calling him “a man of extraordinary character at a moment when we need more character and incredible courage”

“We are in a moment where mayors and governors are more important than ever,” Biden said at the event. “We need leaders to fight the ugly division that comes from Washington every day”

During his tenure as mayor, Walsh oversaw the ongoing rejuvenation of the city, which has led to challenges like gentrification and rising housing costs

He also had to grapple with the history of racial tension in the city in an attempt to make the city more welcoming to people of all origins

Recently, Walsh has led the city through the ongoing coronavirus pandemic with its myriad of challenges, from keeping local businesses running to ensuring comprehensive testing for the virus to determining access to public schools

Last year, Biden posted a message for the annual St Patrick’s Day Breakfast The event brings together the best elected officials in the state, Democrats and Republicans, to enjoy Irish music and food – and gruesome jokes

“We Irish, as you know, are dreamers but we are realists. We are spiritual but we are doubters. We are compassionate but we claim. Everything is ingrained in us: sadness and joy, heartache and hope, steadfastness and Faith, ”said Biden in his message last year,“ We are the only people on earth who are always nostalgic for the future ”

Walsh, the son of Irish immigrants, grew up on a triplane in Boston’s Dorchester working-class neighborhood. As a child, he survived a four-year battle with Burkitt’s lymphoma when he was 7 years old

Walsh said one of the hardest things about his cancer treatment was losing his hair, which was red at the time and difficult to find for a wig.He later recalled how someone who lived on the top floor of the three-family house would feel about himself cut my hair a bit and later came back with an identical red wig

Walsh also shared his early struggles with alcohol and used his history of addiction to encourage others to seek help. He began his speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention by saying, “Good evening, my name is Marty Walsh and I’m an alcoholic ”

“On 23 April 1995 I hit rock bottom. I woke up with little memory of the night before and even less hope for the coming days, ”he said at the time,“ Everyone has lost trust in me, everyone except my family and the labor movement ”

Walsh’s union history has led to some uncomfortable moments as mayor, including when two former Walsh aides were accused of bullying music festival organizers into hiring union workers

Kenneth Brissette, the city’s former tourism director, and Timothy Sullivan, chief of interstate affairs, were convicted in federal court in 2019 of conspiracy to extort the organizers of the Boston Calling music festival by withholding city permits

A federal judge later threw back the convictions, saying the government had failed to demonstrate the existence of any consideration
