BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – A fatal tornado pierced parts of Brunswick County overnight, killing three people and injuring at least 10 Most of the damage occurred in the Ocean Ridge Plantation neighborhood of Ocean Isle Beach

A tornado warning was issued for southeastern Brunswick County near Grissettown at about 11:39 p.m. A confirmed tornado was detected near Honey Island or 13 miles north of Shallotte at 12:00 p.m. At 12:07 p.m. An observed tornado was observed in the Delco area The alert ended at 12:15 pm

In a statement from Brunswick County Emergency Services early Tuesday morning, they reported that an estimated 50 homes were affected by the incident and multiple power lines were damaged, resulting in blackouts asking people to avoid streets and other affected areas while the crews are working to clean up debris and derelict power lines
Due to widespread tornado damage, Brunswick County Schools will be closed to students and staff on Tuesday, and the district is expected to release more details on Tuesday on whether schools will be affected on Wednesday

Starting Tuesday at 1 a.m., Leland Fire Department announced on Facebook that their units were responding as mutual aid to Ocean Isle Beach to help with rescue operations

WWAYs Tanner Barth was in the Ocean Ridge Plantationm neighborhood at 1:20 p.m. where first responders went door to door checking residents out. He observed that some homes were damaged and others appeared to have been torn from their foundations

The Wilmington Fire Department announced that their & rescue teams (RRT-2 and USAR-11) have been deployed to help locate missing people in Brunswick County

According to the Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation, more than 7000 power outages caused by the storm and badly damaged the transmission system that overturned poles and trees. At one point during the storm there were about 35000 utility customers affected
