The University of Tennessee in Chattanooga announced Thursday the sacking of offensive coach Chris Malone after posting a racist tweet to a political activist and former Georgian Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams

Chattanooga Sporting Director Mark Wharton and head coach Rusty Wright released the following statements regarding Malone’s dismissal:

In a tweet that has since been deleted, Malone referred to Abrams, who is black, as “Fat Albert” in a reference to a black male cartoon character. He also accused her of “cheating on an election,” as out of the Screenshot of Shon Gables from CBS 46 showing:

Abrams served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017 and was the minority leader from 2011 to 2017 before focusing on her campaign for the governor

Although Abrams lost the gubernatorial campaign to Republican Brian Kemp, she has remained an extremely influential political figure in Georgia

Abrams is credited with playing a huge role in turning Georgia from red to blue in Joe Biden’s win over Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election

She also stood up for Democratic candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in the Georgia Senate runoff election. Both Warnock and Ossoff won, which means the Senate is a 50:50 split between Democrats and Republicans / p>

With Vice President-elect Kamala Harris severing ties, the Senate now essentially has control of the Democrats

Malone has spent the last two seasons at FCS Chattanooga after three years as an offensive coach at Old Dominion. Previously, he coached Virginia State, James Madison, VMI and UMass

Prior to his coaching career, Malone was a four year starter with Offensive Guard at Virginia Tech
