The 2021 NFL Draft class is a lot of fun in the quarterback position. There’s Trevor Lawrence at the helm, of course, but under Lawrence that class has fascinating depth, even if the sample size isn’t extensive for each player >

One player many wanted to see during the 2020 season was Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder, who was making his third season for the Bearcats and had a tough season from a tough standpoint (55) 1)

Ridder has a great arm, but his potential for an NFL-level crime that focuses on RPOs will be excellent early on

Ridder has shown tremendous ball placement on downfield throws, and there is no question that he can push the ball vertically. The biggest questions about his game at this point would be decision making and especially under pressure

Ridder, like many playmakers in the quarterback position, does not always prefer to “live to downplay someone else” but instead will try to force the problem at times

This is certainly not an uncommon problem and also not always negative for Ridder

Ridder’s decision making was much better in 2020 than a season ago and has proven that he has NFL chops, maybe even top 64 chops …

Against Georgia in the Chick Fil A Peach Bowl, Ridder demonstrated his ability not only to escape the bag and play with his legs, but also to maneuver around the bag and look down

When evaluating quarterbacks for the next level it is important not to look for a finished product, but you certainly want to see at least a few traits in men. Some of the non-negotiable traits that Ridder has are arm talent, mobility, a good feel, natural playing skills and he has a lot more experience than many of the top guys in the 2021 class

For example, someone like Trey Lance only has 17 games while Ridder has 36 games as a starter and shows improvements every year

Things like that are important to NFL clubs, even though Ridder’s potential may not be quite as high as that of someone like Lance

For my buck, a player like Ridder is worth more in the second round than someone like Kyle Trask, since mobility is a non-negotiable trait in today’s NFL. Winning out of the pocket is important, but you have to be able to create when the bag breaks too

Desmond Ridder has that ability in the spades and will be a lot to think about for the NFL teams, especially after such a strong performance against Georgia
