CHAPEL HILL, NC. – Roy Williams has a Hall of Fame resume with more than 900 wins and three national championships in a career that tops two of the most famous programs in college basketball
So it was a surprise Thursday when 70-year-old Williams announced his retirement, saying it was more because of what he didn’t have: the belief that he was still the right coach to head north lead Carolina
After 33 years as Head Coach of the Hall of Fame, our beloved Tar Heel Roy Williams announces his retirement Thank you for everything you have done and meant to everyone who plays and loves our gameRelease ð ?????? : https: // tco / l6y5tRjB2I BildTwittercom / FzTUmbx3v1
During a long, thoughtful press conference on Smith Center Court that bore his name, Williams referred to himself as a coach plagued by losses and mistakes of his own over the past two difficult seasons. One of them saw the only loss of his career and one of them the other saw Williams coach a young group that played amid the COVID-19 pandemic this season
“But deep down, I knew the only thing that would speed it up was if I didn’t feel like I wasn’t the right man for the job anymore”He said I’m not going to say the best man because I never thought I’d be the best at anything. But for 15 years in Kansas I thought I was the right man. During that time in North Carolina, I thought I was the one right man I no longer feel like the right man for the jobâ ????
The breathtaking news came two weeks after Williams turned 18 Season with the tar heels had ended after a hugely successful 15-year run with the Jayhawks. In total, Williams won 903 games in 2005, 2009 and 2017 in a career that spanned those three tar heel titles
The last time Williams left North Carolina he was a virtually unknown assistant who got his first shot as college head coach in Kansas after 10 years under late mentor Dean Smith
Williams had talked about how Smith ???? who still respectfully calls Williams “Coach Smith” after all these years â ???? concerned about how hard Williams suffered as an assistant. So much was Thursday when Williams? often with a trembling voice when he fought back his tears – ???? told some of his self-described coaching mistakes

They were the kind of details that really bothered him When pondering his future after losing to Wisconsin in the NCAA tournament in the first round, it was his only setback in the first round in 30 tournaments
â ???? Olâ ???? Roy is going to feel pretty good about what we achieved Williams said â ???? Olâ ???? Roy will be proud But the problem is, olâ ???? Roy is selfish. He wanted more and I didn’t think I could cheat on my school and my kidsâ ????
Williams had thrived on lessons rooted in his time under Smith, even though he had forged his own style Williams always pushed for more and usually he got it.His teams played fast, and Williams waved his arms desperately for them They attacked the boards with his preferred two-post style. He stubbornly hoarded timeouts, saying his team should be prepared for most situations through training
His competitive pressure is fierce and is only marginally obscured by his popular sayings and charm from his time in the mountains of North Carolina, and in the end he won more national championships than Smith’s two
“I could never come close to agreeing with what Coach Smith did,” Williams said. But every day I tried to make him proudâ ????

Williamsâ ???? Time as assistant coach including the tar heelsâ ???? Run to the 1982 championship for Smith’s first title, a game in which newcomer Michael Jordan memorably kicked off the Georgetown win
“Roy Williams is and will remain a Carolina basketball legend,” Jordan said in a statement by its chief executive officer, “His great success on the court is really being matched by the impact it has had on the lives of the players he coached”Including me, I’m proud of the way he continued the tradition of Coach Smith’s program and always put his players first”

Williamsâ ???? According to him, retirement surprised Hall of Famer colleague Mike Krzyzewski at rival Duke
“While we were on the other side of college basketball’s greatest rivalry, we both understood how lucky we were to be a part of it and always tried to portray it as it deserved “???? Krzyzewski said his legacy is assured as one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history ”
After Kansas took a chance on Williams in 1988, he spent 15 seasons there, taking the Jayhawks to four final fours and two national title games.Williams took over the UNC acquisition in 2000 after the resignation of Bill Guthridge, but ultimately couldn’t say no second time and returned as coach in 2003 after the tumultuous Matt Doherty era that included an 8-20 season
Along with the 2005 and 2009 titles, Williamsâ ???? Tar Heels won in 2017 with a team that included players who lost the 2016 final to Villanova with a 3-pointer
Williams only lost one season ???? an injury-ridden 14-19 year in 2019-20 â ???? and otherwise, he only missed the NCAAs in his first season in Kansas when he inherited a parole program and in 2010 with a UNC team that made it to the NIT finals
“I love to coach, work the kids on the pitch, the locker room, the trips, the” jumping around ” (Foreplay) music, trying to build a team, ???? Williams said I will always love this And I am mortally afraid of the next phase But I no longer feel like the right manâ ????
